Changing Seasons and Spare Time

It's been four months since the last bog post here, and I have plenty of excuses and a few good reasons to have been so long between updates! It was a super hot, busy, change-filled summer for The Ranch; we've welcomed new boarders and new horses along with new problems and a whole slew of solutions to solve them (or better said, more sloughs, literally). We trained young horses and made retirement decisions for older ones, plus added new students to the lesson program, survived the first four-day horse camp any of us had ever been to, slayed it at the Payette County Fair and had an adventure to the local horse auction where Joe lost his head and brought home a project. We cut and baled hay, watered fields and then worked to get all the extra water out of the arena due to some very persistent water tables. Needless to say, spare time has been hard to find.

While we are always busy here, we finally got a chance to really enjoy ourselves last weekend when we hosted the first ever RSR Horse Playday. It ended up being part 4H Fundraiser, part makeup for the cancelled 4th of July playday and part trial run for holding horse events in the future here. We had about 16 riders of all ages on a variety of horses and had a blast playing games like keyhole, the ribbon race, pole bending, and the ever-popular barrel racing to name just a few. We could have added a lot more games but I felt everyone left here sufficiently satisfied with the time they got to spend with their horses and with at least one of the many raffle prizes Allie and I spent all week making. Rope halters, polo wraps, rhythm beads, wither straps and a very cool mecate rein all made their way to new homes (much to Allie's chagrin, since she wanted to keep half the stuff we made :D). All in all it was a wonderful day, and having it happen to be exactly on the one year anniversary of the building of the arena made it even sweeter.

I can't tell you how proud and happy we are that what we have envisioned to build for years is finally coming together and benefiting as many horse-loving people as we can gather together. Here are a bunch of great pictures of the Playday courtesy of the 'Rents, since I took a grand sum total of two pictures the whole day, I was so busy! I hope you can join us for our next Playday, because I'm certain we'll be having many more of these in the future. Enjoy!
